Going All In On Entrepreneurship

For many small business owners, the path to success often begins with a bold leap of faith. Entrepreneurship is a road less traveled, filled with uncertainties and challenges, but also brimming with boundless opportunities and personal fulfillment. In ‘Build Your Digital Community’ Episode 25 with Olivia Austin, a coach and the owner of Motive Deck and Current Design Studio, we discuss going all in on entrepreneurship - from leaving comfortable jobs, being a multi-passionate entrepreneur and taking massive action on your goals.

Pursuing Your Calling

The majority of our adult lives revolve around work. Some of us love our jobs. Some of us hate them. But we believe that you should get to love your job - and that you CAN love your job without resorting to things like quiet quitting.

From a very early age, we are told to fit into a box: to go to college, graduate, get a job, and be an executive of someone else’s company. We believe that doing all of these things makes us good and successful and well-established. Yet, we may still have a calling to pursue a greater purpose that cannot be ignored.

However, if our community and immediate network is made up of people with similar trajectories, it can be daunting for us to go all in on entrepreneurship and going out on our own.

We’re here to remind you to do it anyway.

Leaving A Stable Situation To Go After Your Dream

Leaving a stable, comfortable job (that you may also enjoy!) can be a difficult leap to make.

Perhaps you’re being met with resistance from your family, a partner, or friends. Maybe you feel scarcity around abandoning the perks that come with your job - like health insurance, pensions, or paid leave.

However, you never know what could happen. All of these things could change. You could be made redundant. You could even die (sorry, morbid - we know)! Don’t make long-term career decisions based on whatever comes after your career or rewards you may or may not reap in decades down the line. Make decisions based on what you desire to do today.

Be protective about who you are sharing your ideas with, especially if you are a person who needs approval and motivation. Most of the time, your parents and friends are going to react from a place of love and fear. They likely are projecting their insecurities onto you and don’t understand the drive you have to go after your passion.

Instead, get in rooms with people with bigger dreams than you and talk about them. These spaces are easier to dialogue about your own dreams and share big ideas or goals that you have.

Being A Multi-Passionate, Multidisciplinary Entrepreneur

As an entrepreneur, it is amazing how many things you can do to make money AND how many things you can do to light your soul up. If something is constantly in your head and heart, it’s there for a reason and it’s with YOU for a specific reason. If you’re thinking about it all the time, you should go for it and try it. You don’t have a dream you wouldn’t be able to execute.

You may have tons of ideas and dreams floating around your head, but they don’t all have to happen today. Remember, good things take time. You need to give yourself grace and balance. You won't be able to work on all of your businesses simultaneously or evenly - and that is okay.

If you’re thinking of starting another business, Olivia recommends looking at the numbers first and then determining how much time you can dedicate to make it happen. There will always be seasons where you need to focus on one thing more than another. It’s ultimately about striking a sustainable balance between them based on their needs.

Don’t Just Dream - Take Action

There are a lot of people who have a lot of ideas, but rarely do they come to fruition. The difference between a dream and a goal is taking massive action. You have to do something that is going to change something or make something happen.

You can think about these things all you want, putting them off or claiming you’re too busy to start. But real results take place in the messy action. It doesn’t need to be perfect or expertly planned out. Just start and things will begin to come together.
