‘Investment’ Over ‘Price’
Whenever potential clients book discovery calls with us, we always like to acknowledge, we know it is scary and a difficult situation. Whether it is deciding to join a membership for $30 a month that you aren’t sure what the return will be, or you are making a 5 figure investment in a coach or mastermind, fear can definitely take over.
This is why, as entrepreneurs, mindset work is crucial to the success of your business, and believe us when we tell you that we know it is easier said than done. Working on your business is often a labour of love, and your business feels like an extension of yourself. Every penny we make as entrepreneurs is hard earned, and that is why it is so important to make investments wisely, but it is also what often can keep us from big opportunities.
We’ve all heard of a growth mindset versus a scarcity mindset (and if not, this Forbes article gives some good tips!), and can all think of times when we’ve fallen into either. There are business decisions we’ve made with extreme scarcity, and others we’ve made with outrageous abundance – neither wrong, both had their place.
One of the biggest shifts for us that changed the way we thought about our investments is thinking about things we pay for as an investment, rather than a price. This took some work, and sometimes it is hard to see certain things as investments, such as sending a client a starbucks gift card for a milestone or trying out a new scheduling platform for your business, but they all are. Every step you take (even the ones that turn out to be ‘wrong’) are meant to bring you to where you and your business are supposed to be!
Mindset work is easier said than done, and it cannot be trained overnight (or from just one blog post), so we’ve definitely got some tips for you on how you can start working towards an abundance or growth mindset for your business!
1. Gratitude
When you come across any situation, it is time to start training your brain to ask “what is the good here?” or “what can I be thankful for?”. You can do this in a variety of ways, but some of them could include end of the day, beginning of the day or keeping a journal that outlines this. Many people do this for their personal life, but what about if you did this for your business as well? Some questions you could ask yourself:
What went well this week in my business?
That moment was challenging – what do I think I was supposed to learn from it?
What interactions left me feeling overjoyed and remind me of why I do this work?
No matter your industry, you can ask yourself some of these questions.
2. Self-Work
Maria and I are basically never not in a mastermind, being coached or working on some type of course. We choose carefully, and think hard about what the return of every investment can be. Have we made investments in things that have not returned? No. The reason for this is twofold. Firstly, we choose to view everything as a learning experience and you never know how something might turn out until you try it. Secondly, there is something to take or learn from anything. Some programs haven’t had the most amazing content, but the network has been incredible. Some have the alternative. You can’t predict what you are going to get from it, but you just need to show up, engage and grow!
If an investment into a coach or a mastermind is not calling your name, you can also read a book that you can borrow from a friend, library or Libby. This is how we got started before we started making big investments in our business!
Some books we recommend that were really helpful to our success in growing our mindset and our business are:
These are just some of the books you could read, of course, and there are loads that might resonate with you, but here is a great place to start if you are new to mindset
work in your business!
3. Changing the way you talk to clients
If you’re going to change the language of ‘price’ to investment for yourself, you need to do it in your business and inspire it in your clients, as well. If you start talking about your services as an investment in themselves or in their business, they start to think about other things that are investments as well, which have served them well. Your services are just like that, and like any business owner, you want to add value to your clients. Change the language on your website to be ‘Investment: $’ and see how that changes the lens of the work you are doing, either by you or your clients!
It might not seem like making this small change would have tremendous impact on what your business can be, but when you understand that your potential is limitless and investing in yourself and your business is going to change your life, I think you’ll thank us!
